    Data Services & Analyses

A Benchmarking Consortium membership provides institutions with custom deep dive analyses, allowing them to answer strategic questions related to finances, budgeting, student success, enrollment & more.

    Key Questions Benchmarking Can Answer

Is your institution spending competitively to recruit and retain staff?
Is it possible to realign administrative resources to combat bloat?
What is the right level of centralization for an RCM school?
Is your investment in student services resulting in higher enrollment rates?
How can you staff up to support an expanding student population and/or expanding research budgets?
How do your staffing levels compare against your peer group and top nationally ranked schools?
How have your diversity investments impacted under-represented minority enrollment and completion rates?

    Data Services

Deeper analyses allow us to provide data and insights beyond what members can directly access in the platform. Membership comes with three Insights Meetings per year, including one or more analysis per meeting. The following are options to choose from:

Analyzes the difference in efficiencies of various organizational structures and budget models. Sample use cases: Compare centralization levels for RCM universities to understand the mix between centralized administrative activities vs. those done in the academic units.

Determine the activities and sub-activities that show the highest and lowest staffing levels across your institution as compared to benchmarks. Sample use cases: Identify specific functions where you can re-allocate staff to optimize admin spend, target under-resourced areas for additional investment.

Analyzes the impact of a significant staff reduction on a university's work force, from both a department perspective and administrative activity perspective. Sample use case: Assess how a voluntary separation incentive program has impacted or could impact your staffing levels.

Deep dive into specific areas within the administration that are driving high levels of spend to understand the efficiencies of those operations and what improvements can be made. Sample use cases: Identify drivers of Facilities investments for rural universities, understand the titles/depts driving decentralized General Accounting spend at your university.

Examine an academic unit’s administrative staffing against other internal academic departments and the equivalent external benchmarks at peer institutions. Sample use case: Compare your Business School’s administrative staffing levels to other internal departments as well as external Business School benchmarks.

Use outcome measures relevant to a certain activity or sub-activity to benchmark and understand the benefit of that spend level and the impact it is having at the institution. Sample use case: Evaluate how your Diversity investments have impacted under-represented minority enrollment and completion rates and how that compares to benchmarks. Understand the correlation between your spend in student services to your retention rates over time.

Integrate your data with supplemental data sources (e.g., employee classifications, funding sources, custom analysis factor, etc.) for an advanced analysis for a sub-set of members. Sample use case: Benchmark new net tuition revenue versus your admissions labor spend to understand relative efficiency. Understand your facilities spend on the physical plant and compare to like institutions.

Examines the intensity of your administrative staffing by calculating an Administrative Intensity Measure (AIM - i.e. the percentage of total labor spend spent on administrative activities vs. academic) across different levels of your organization. Sample use cases: Use your AIM to understand administrative bloat and potentially re-align administrative resource allocations or show how administratively lean your institution is to make a case for additional funding.

Examines spend per FTE, titles, and other analysis factors to better understand compensation and staffing levels relative to benchmarks. Sample use case: Compare total compensation for specific admin and academic functions to benchmarks to see how competitive your institution is in recruiting and retaining staff.

Assesses the level of staffing required to reach aspirational targets or goals. Sample use cases: Determine how your university would need to staff up in student services or research administration to serve an expanding student population, expanding research budgets or moving up in the national rankings.

Benchmarking for a functional department, not included in the Standard Activity Model (SAM). Sample use cases: Compare your mental health staffing levels to benchmarks, evaluate your libraries’ staffing levels and how they’ve changed over time relative to your student enrollments.

Analyzes your Academics activities using several high-level ratios and compares your labor mix of Academic employee types to benchmarks. Sample use cases: Assess the ratio of admin to academic staff at your university compared to benchmarks, evaluate how the labor mix of adjuncts and tenure or tenure-track faculty are changing over time and the impact on student retention and completion rates.

Compare the level of staffing growth over time internally with enrollment changes for each of your academic units (schools/colleges) over time. Sample use case: Understand the balance between student enrollment growth and staffing levels in the academic units to identify opportunities for investment or resource re-allocation.

Incremental Offering: Quality & Satisfaction Survey

Only available to Benchmarking Consortium members, the satisfaction survey uses established survey questions aimed at assessing levels of customer satisfaction across SAM activities. Once the survey is created and the data is collected, it is coded and analyzed to help the institution determine the satisfaction level with various administrative departments across the institution.
