The Power of Data During a Big Transition

Overview

During the fall of 2018, the long-time president of the University of South Carolina (UofSC), an eight-campus system serving over 50,000 students, announced his retirement the following year. With his announcement came the realization that new leadership would need a clear snapshot of strategic improvement opportunities in order to succeed – and that the current siloed data systems weren’t going to supply sufficient insights.

Revamping their data systems and capabilities was step one, with the end goal of improving data self-service and making operational reporting more efficient. To accomplish this rapid transformation, UofSC partnered with HelioCampus. Read the case study to learn how they did this, including how they were able to quickly pivot to assess LMS data when the pandemic hit.

"When we were looking for a partner, we wanted to find someone who was profoundly oriented to higher education,” Kelly says. When an initial staff survey reported 100% buy-in for HelioCampus, Kelly knew they were on the right track.

Why partner with HelioCampus?

  • UofSC wanted to move from a reactive to proactive state to ask questions like “what will happen, if?” and then, “what should we do about it?” as opposed to simply reporting "what happened?"
  • HelioCampus’s user-friendly platform makes it easier for end users to access data by connecting disparate data sources. This improves accuracy and allows administrators to access data on their own time.

Pivoting in a pandemic to analyze LMS data like...

  • activity hours per student;
  • the number of video conferencing sessions per class;
  • total number of hours spent video conferencing;
  • course interactions;
  • and key demographics, which would allow leadership to uncover and address possible inequities.
