HelioCampus seeks a BI Engineer.  This role will be responsible for designing, building and testing our reporting platform with a focus on data modeling and manipulation to create concise data sets for our business intelligence and data science tools.

LOCATION: Chapel Hill, NC

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

The BI Engineer will support the process of data discovery by exploring and cultivating data sets and dashboard solutions. This resource will assist research and analysis efforts to find the latest techniques and cutting-edge dashboard solutions to key business questions. The BI Engineer will conceptualize problems, apply appropriate theory, explore approaches, simulate, and implement solutions. In addition to descriptive BI reporting, this resource will work to create and enhance predictive & prescriptive statistical models. Some tasks involved will be data validation, performance tuning and facilitate end user testing on designed reports, dashboards and statistical models. They will be responsible for supporting ongoing production operations, maintaining and modifying supplied solutions. They will be expected to create functional / technical specifications to document design approaches. They will collaborate with other teams to gather data and proactively seek and locate data, including outside benchmarks or comparative data, to support or refute proposed decisions. In addition, a talented resource will be able to create tools to automate and streamline maintenance and development efforts. This resource must have excellent communication skills in order to present and explain their findings and solutions.

DESIRED EDUCATION AND PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience as a Tableau BI developer
  • A minimum of 2 year of experience with relational databases, SQL, Amazon Redshift / PostgreSQL (or similar)
  • Experience in leveraging R, Python, SAS or similar tools to perform complex statistical analysis a plus
  • Excellent communication skills and an adept problem solver
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
  • Excellent attention to detail as well as the ability to focus on big picture items
  • Ability to work effectively on multiple priorities with firm deliverable dates
  • Experience working closely with both business users and technical development teams
  • Talented in manipulating and analyzing complex, high-volume, high-dimensionality data from varying sources
  • Extensive experience in and strong passion for empirical research and answering hard questions with data
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to effectively convey findings and broad trends to a variety of audiences and positively influence senior leadership
  • Ability to tell stories with data using data visualization software Tableau, Excel, R, Python, or similar software in conjunction with strong verbal ability. Experience with Power BI a plus.
  • Knowledge of University administrative organization, policies, procedures, and practices for institutional research-oriented roles is a plus
